Customer Disservice

Apparently you do not have to speak a lick of English to have a customer service job in this country. I know this because I just spent 35 minutes on the phone with someone who didn't understand a word of what I was saying even when I resorted to baby speak: baba phone, it is a baba phone; rudimentary phonics: phone is bad, it's not working, no call waiting; some sort of Italian that I thought may relay my message: phone no worka, help me please, phone isa bad; or loud: GIVE ME YOUR SUPERVISOR, DO YOU UNDERSTAND ANYTHING I AM SAYING?

Nothing worked.
WTF?

  1. They might not have even been located in the U.S. A lot of customer service outfits are now lotcated in India. You dial the 800 number and get some towlhead with a Ph.D in some technical field working for a buck an hour. Some companies are out-right sneaky about it, too. Like, some companies that don't want you to know the score divide their people up by geographic area, then order the local papers for that area, etc., so they can babble something about local events while resolving your problem. Doesn't sound like you had anyone that sophisticated, though. Instead of Italian maybe ou should have tried ebonics.
